FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I have to be present for the Fire Escape Inspection?

It is highly recommended that you, or a authorized representative (such as facilities manager, tenant or maintenance supervisor) to be present for the Inspection. Often due to granting access to the fire escape (via enclosed back yard, gated property, apartment window, exit door to system). Especially multi-level balconies that are not connected to each other. If the fire escape has easy access from the ground or from the street/alley, then verbal consent to allow the Inspector to be on the property, is usually sufficient to proceed with inspection

How long does an Inspection take?

The duration of a fire escape inspection can vary widely depending on the size and complexity of the system, ranging from 30-45 minutes for smaller systems (3 to 5 floors), to several hours for larger systems (6 to 15+ floors). Preparation and readiness can streamline the process

What are common Fire Escape Obstructions?

Flowerpots, mops, buckets, brooms, bicycles, and patio furniture are commonly found obstructing fire escapes. AC units are at the top of the list. Items like trash, toys, and other debris can create trip hazards for people trying to use the escape route. In some cases, branches and overgrown greenery can block the path along a fire escape

What happens if a violation is found during Inspection?

If a violation is found, the inspector will usually issue a report detailing the violations. During the inspection, the inspector will discuss any violations with the property or business owner and work together to set a deadline for correction. Follow-up inspections may be conducted to ensure compliance. In some rare situations, serious, uncorrected violations might result in fines or, in extreme cases, immediate closure of the building and until the issues is resolved

Can I store items or furniture or use the platform as a mini garden?

No. Storing anything, including bikes, plants or garbage on a fire escape staircase or landing is STRICTLY PROHIBITED. It obstructs vital evacuation routes and poses severe life-safety risks, often resulting in legal penalties and fines
